I grew up thinking holidays were days the government gave you off so could do whatever you wanted to do. I was in my late 30’s or early 40’s when it dawned on me that the purpose for the holiday was to get together with other people and celebrate the reason for the holiday. Once again, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little Town on the Prairie, clued me in on American history I had not been taught in public school in the 1960’s and 70’s.
